Ashlyn diligently works hard to maintain fluid interprofessional team relationships. Her strength lies in her amazing sense of humor and contagious laughter, which she uses to positively impact patient care and to maintain quality collaboration with everyone. Intensive care can be a difficult place to work, especially at times when you have to face families of struggling patients and you have no good news to give them to keep them positive and hopeful. Last week, I was in a similar situation. Every day, my patient’s elderly mother came to see her, struggling herself, and I felt so bad. On my third shift, when the lady arrived, I was attending to my other patient. Ashlyn was my charge that day, and she greeted the lady. When I came out, I saw them joking and giggling. It was the first time I saw any happiness on her face. It was priceless. Even in adverse situations, if anyone can bring any pleasure to such people, that is an ability that truly deserves to be recognized and encouraged. As Maya Angelou said: "people will forget what you said or what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Being in the service industry, what I have learned is that perception is reality. So thank you, Ashlyn, for your unique skill to enhance customer service even in complex circumstances.
