the stress the neighbor obviously felt was alleviated by his behavior. He was calm, patient, and communicative with the two families
A trauma patient with no local family or POA and two language barriers had a midnight visitation from his neighbors who spoke his family’s native dialect and had gathered his entire family around a single village phone for a goals of care conversation. Marvin Rios calmly and kindly guided both the Spanish-speaking and the native family through a goals of care conversation, accurately and respectfully translating their concerns to me as well as the information we needed them to consider. He never once pressured or pushed his own agenda, and the stress the neighbor obviously felt was alleviated by his behavior. He was calm, patient, and communicative with the two families, in three languages, for almost two hours between midnight and 2 am. It was only through his presence and manner that we were finally able to convey the severity of the patient's condition across a continent, and the patient’s care was progressed for the first time in weeks.
