Good nursing is about exercising comprehensive skills, identifying changes in conditions, responding with appropriate interventions, and providing compassionate quality care to all patients regardless of background.  I
Kezia is an excellent nurse and human being.  She is knowledgeable and experienced, both at the bedside and as a charge nurse. She can lead her team through any situation.  In her free time away from work, she loves to spend time with her friends, family, and her numerous pets.

This week, I watched her react quickly to a decompensating patient and helped lead a team of nurses as they attempted cardiac pulmonary resuscitation.  When the patient passed, she spoke softly to the patient’s family, providing words of comfort and obtaining necessary information for postmortem care.  During the same shift, she responded quickly to a patient with an unstable AAA and flew that patient in critical condition to a higher level of care. Next, she assisted the family of a teenage patient in a mental health crisis. This teenage patient demonstrated serious mental health disparities as he admitted to torturing and killing both small animals and cats.

As an animal lover, it was possibly difficult to provide compassionate and unbiased care to someone whose actions are directly conflicting to your own personal values.  Despite this patient’s actions, she provided him with exceptional care and assisted to get this individual the help he needed. She also provided the family with emotional support, likely making as much a difference in their experience and their lives as she had only hours before with the family of a patient who had passed away unexpectedly.

Nursing isn’t always about kissing grandmas on the cheek or making little kids feel better. It’s providing compassionate care to all patients of all backgrounds despite personal bias because all patients are entitled to high-quality nursing care.  Good nursing is about exercising comprehensive skills, identifying changes in conditions, responding with appropriate interventions, and providing compassionate quality care to all patients regardless of background.  It’s about working with and supporting your teammates through all situations to provide quality care to our community.
