She emerged as the clinical group leader, often taking inexperienced peers under her wing to explain the basics of care, even down to how to talk to patients.
Rachelle is a non-traditional student (Edge Student), having answered the call to obtain her nursing degree as a second career. She moved here from Colorado, and not only transitioned to a new state, but decided to enter college as a working adult with a family. Rachelle has stood out as a student since we first worked together in her very first clinical. She emerged as the clinical group leader, often taking inexperienced peers under her wing to explain the basics of care, even down to how to talk to patients. Rachelle enjoys being challenged, often exceeding expectations. She recently during her clinical experience cared for a complex young patient who was unfortunately diagnosed with a complex medical condition. The patient was very acutely ill, needing an emergent IV placed and a high risk medication to be given.  Rachelle was needing to offer the patient comfort and education.  She excelled being able to complete all interventions the nurse and clinical instructor needed. The patient's comment regarding her care from Rachelle was, "I can't believe how she knows the answers to everything you asked, she is going to be a phenomenal RN."  The patient also stated that based on Rachelle's performance at clinical, that she is considering applying to MPTC to achieve a degree in nursing. In post conference that day, Rachelle was able to explain complex medical conditions related to the patient's state of health including: Lupus Nephritis, sepsis, AKI, chronic renal failure, hematuria, hypovolemia, intra renal injury and lab values including: Creatinine, eGFR, CBC, CMP and H&H. Besides being an honor student, Rachelle has also answered the call of being a nursing program tutor. She has tutored several students in: Nursing Fundamentals, Pharmacology, and CHA 1. She has expressed a desire to continue giving back to MPTC by offering tutoring services to those who are struggling in theory courses. Rachelle is also Vice President of the Student Nurse's Association. She thrives not only in theory and clinical, but also amongst her peers. She drives many students to their clinicals, so to decrease stress to those around her. She leads a study group with other students, continuing to share her knowledge, and share it with those who seek it and look up to her. Her career goals including giving back to the MPTC community by becoming a cardiac or ICU nurse as she has a special place in her heart for patients with complex medical conditions. I often hear Rachelle during our clinical experiences speaking to clinical agency staff, other students, and patients about the wonderful education she has been given at MPTC, and how honored she feels being able to call MPTC her Alma Mater.
