I am the diabetes educator at Wellstar Douglas. One of my patients was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes many years ago but has tried to manage it with herbs because he did not trust insulin and medications. Nurse Audrey was compassionate and kind to this patient. The patient informed me that she talked to him for at least 30 minutes to help him understand diabetes and the importance of getting his blood sugars under control. By the time I came to do my consult, the patient was open and receptive to the information. I am thoroughly convinced that if it weren’t for Nurse Audrey, this patient would not have been receptive to my consult. He was willing to listen, share information and do return demonstrations with me. Nurse Audrey helped me get this patient to develop a plan of care for when he is discharged. I am thoroughly impressed, and I believe she is deserving of a DAISY Award for taking the time to help educate and empower this patient.
