Within a few minutes, Denise developed a strong rapport with the Veteran and discovered he was unable to read.
Denise has been working at the Lexington VAMC for over 30 years. I have had the pleasure of working with Denise for five years. Every shift I have worked beside her, she has been a role model and displays exactly what needs to be done to be an outstanding nurse. Anytime there is a question or issue, she always has the answer. Whether it is caring for a critically ill patient or involving a VA policy, Denise is the go-to for the answer. She thrives in chaotic situations and is the first to jump in if something is wrong with one of our veterans. She exhibits all the characteristics of the VA’s core values. She shows integrity by always keeping her word and being kind but clear and direct with her patients. She shows her commitment daily through the way she approaches and cares for her patients. They always leave smiling due to the compassion she shows. She advocates for her patients to ensure they are receiving the appropriate level of care and to make sure that they feel heard and understood. She gives the utmost respect to all she encounters, patients and coworkers alike. Excellence is the perfect word to describe Denise’s practice. Her care is exemplary, and she holds herself to a very high standard when it comes to the quality of care she provides.
Denise is very intuitive as well and often picks up on things that others would overlook. There was a veteran who came to the ER who was frustrated and upset due to issues with his home medications. Multiple people tried to help this veteran, but no one seemed to figure out the exact issue. Within a few minutes, Denise developed a strong rapport with the Veteran and discovered he was unable to read. She encouraged and ensured him that he would receive appropriate care and assistance. She worked alongside the pharmacy and got a special medication container that assisted him with taking the correct medications, giving the Veteran confidence and peace of mind in continuing his care. We are very lucky and thankful to have Denise as part of the ED team.
