Nurse Beckner's compassion towards S's comfort made all the difference in the world. S would become agitated when anyone would come into the room to conduct necessary medical checks. Nurse Beckner would be as gentle as possible with S.
Our daughter, S, was in the Surgical Unit at Children's National following an open reduction for hip dysplasia. Olivia Becker was the attending nurse for S the day before and on the morning of her discharge. We are appreciative of the extraordinary clinical skill and extraordinary care provided by Nurse Becker. We wish to nominate Nurse Olivia Buckner for the DAISY Award.
As the parents of an 18-month-old, we had what seemed to be never-ending questions in relation to her medications and care. Nurse Beckner took the time to use her clinical skill to compassionately provide answers to all the questions posed. Nurse Beckner made us comfortable to ask any questions that we could think. As parents, we never felt rushed when dealing with Nurse Becker. The two shifts S was under the care of Nurse Becker were the easiest days we could have in the circumstance.
S never had to wait for her medications. As parents, we were not tasked with trying to call or find Nurse Becker when it was time for S to be administered medications. When medications were complete and the medical equipment set alerts, it felt as though we never had to wait. Nurse Beckner would always be in the room in a matter of minutes to stop the alerts. S was able to recover and relax more than usual due to Nurse Beckner's dedication and timeliness.
In addition to her clinical skills, Nurse Becker did everything that she could to make S comfortable. Nurse Beckneer would help us put S into comfortable positions, her change her diapers in the spica cast, and provided soft gel packs for S to rest her feet on. On our first day at the hospital, we were asked where we wanted S's prescriptions filled. We initially chose our local pharmacy. They called and said that they did not stock the medications prescribed. Before S was under the care of Nurse Becker, we updated the information to have the prescription filled at Walgreens at Children's National. When checking to see if the prescription had been filled, we were informed by the pharmacy that the prescription was never sent. Nurse Beckner worked with the orthopedic resident to get the prescription sent to Walgreens at 5:45 pm. We went down to the pharmacy, and they again said they did not have the order. Nurse Beckner expeditiously worked to fill the prescription within 5 minutes of the pharmacy closing. This compassion to help us fill the prescription was just another example of how Nurse Becker went above and beyond to help S.
At Children's National, S had closed reduction in April 2023, and another procedure in June 2023, and now the open reduction. We can say through all of that, S was more comfortable and we were put the most at ease as parents under the care of Nurse Becker. We feel as though Nurse Beckner's dedication, clinical skill and compassion are truly exemplary.
