My husband, J, and I arrived on 15 Honeysuckle Road at Birchaven Village in July. What a welcome we received! Everyone was so welcoming and caring. J and I immediately felt comfortable at Birchaven, knowing he would get the medical care he needed. What I found to be even more impressive was that we both received the emotional support necessary to sustain us during the eight months we called 15 Honeysuckle Road our home. Teresa, Abby, Dianne, and Laura were our regular nurses; Michelle always seemed to be there when we needed her. They were awesome. J sometimes wasn’t an easy patient because all he wanted was to go home, but they stuck with us and helped us overcome many hurdles with his illness. At one point during our stay, we decided to move J to a room with more windows and light, and two days later, moved him back to “his” room. No one complained about moving him twice. J looked for pennies and plaques and tried to start an assembly line while he was there. Again, everyone supported him rather than telling him there were no pennies, no plaques, and no assembly line. Their care and concern for his recovery seemed to be their highest priority. There were so many fun times and laughter as well as tears and sadness. They made our lives so much richer by having met them, and they were an absolute delight at a time when we needed it most. Even after J lost his battle, these amazing nurses continue to support me by attending his visitation at the funeral home and making me feel welcome whenever I stop by for a visit. It’s good to see the faces of those who spent the better part of eight months with me and J. I think of them as family because they were our family during the eight months we made 15 Honeysuckle Road our home. I wish there were awards for the respiratory therapists and the STNAs, who were equally phenomenal.
