Selena Davis encountered a mother whose baby was admitted to NICU. This was not the mother's first baby, but was a first experience of having a NICU baby. Not only did the baby have to be admitted to NICU for prematurity, but the mother was admitted to the main unit. This mother and baby were separated physically and for several days. Selena made sure to check in on this mother and ensure she had necessary supplies. This mother desired to provide her own breast milk to her baby, she did not want to give donor milk and the baby was too premature to even get formula. This mother set up pumping and used the hospital's pump termporarily. Selena helped this mother obtain her own personal pump by ensuring her OB signed a prescription and then submitted paperwork to a local DME business. The pump was approved, but the mother had trouble getting the pump herself. The mother was post-op abdominal surgery (c-section) and her other children were being taken care of by other family members. Selena noticed the mother still had not picked up her pump. After discussion and permission of the mother, Selena picked up the pump and returned it to this mother. The mother was very appreciative and has since established and maintained her milk supply. This mother's baby is now able to grow strong on her mother's own milk. Selena is a caring nurse and takes mothers under her wing often. This situation really highlights how much she cares and extends her hand whenever there is a need. Even though this was for a nursing mother, Selena still completed her regular job duties first, then at the end of her shift, she drove to pick up the pump. This proves her accountability and dependency as a team member. Great job, Selena! You are awesome!
