Sue would spend extra time with him to talk to him and provide comfort and emotional support, knowing how much distress this was causing him.
Sue Proia was one of the primary nurses caring for my uncle after a very long and complicated hospital stay. During this hospital stay, my other uncle suddenly passed away very unexpectedly. This uncle who passed away was the primary caretaker of my uncle, who was in-patient. They were the best of friends. It was very important for my uncle to be present at the funeral and be able to say his goodbyes. I spoke with Sue about this and what a huge undertaking this would be on so many levels. She did not bat an eye and immediately went to work and got the ball rolling to make this miracle happen. Throughout the process, there were times we were not sure it would be possible, leaving my uncle very stressed and heartbroken. Sue would spend extra time with him to talk to him and provide comfort and emotional support, knowing how much distress this was causing him. The week of the services, she was off on vacation, and she offered to help my uncle on her day off to get him to the services. Throughout his several-week hospital stay on the 6th floor, Sue provided him with exceptional care, advocacy, and support. However, helping to get my uncle to the funeral to say goodbye was far beyond anything in her job description. Despite all my family’s heartache and hardships between one uncle being gravely ill and the sudden passing of another, we still feel fortunate to have had Sue in our corner. Your hospital should feel just as fortunate to have her as your staff and representing your hospital. Thank you, Sue, for all you have done for our family.
