Brittany’s exemplary service, clinical skills, compassion, remarkable resourcefulness, and unwavering dedication to patient-centered care epitomize the qualities of the “DAISY Award”.
I enthusiastically nominate Brittany for the DAISY Award in recognition of her remarkable dedication and exceptional patient advocacy. During a recent medical procedure for my husband, we encountered a significant challenge due to an administrative error in scheduling his colonoscopy. My husband was supposed to be scheduled for a double-balloon colonoscopy at East Ann Arbor; however, upon arrival, Brittany informed us that this procedure was not performed at that facility but rather at the main MPU at the University Hospital.

Despite this setback, Brittany’s exemplary professionalism and unwavering commitment to patient care shone brightly! At the onset, it became apparent that the wrong type of colonoscopy had been scheduled for my husband, who required a double-balloon scope. This unexpected oversight had left us in a state of disbelief. We had taken every precaution, even meeting with GI to ensure the correct procedure was ordered. My husband’s complex medical history, including previous difficulties with accessing certain areas of the colon during the scope, made this error particularly distressing, and we were distraught and tearful. Despite the initial confusion, Brittany swiftly sprang into action, demonstrating remarkable resourcefulness and empathy.

Brittany promptly sought the assistance of the GI physician to determine our options. She asked the physician to come to the pre-op area to discuss the options she could offer us, given the fact that my husband had already prepped for the procedure. Commendably, the physician attempted to use a pediatric scope to navigate the ascending colon and cecum but was unsuccessful. In an extraordinary display of dedication, Brittany collaborated with her supervisor to explore alternative solutions. She then identified an opportunity for a follow-up appointment with the GI physician at the MPU in the main hospital the next day, ensuring timely access to the necessary medical intervention.

Additionally, Brittany and her supervisor documented the issues and facilitated communication with the medical director of the EAA surgical center. She left my contact information for the director to conduct a thorough root-cause analysis of the scheduling discrepancy. Brittany’s proactive efforts and compassionate care were instrumental in navigating a complex and potentially distressing situation. Her unwavering commitment to advocating for my husband’s well-being and ensuring a swift resolution to the scheduling error was truly commendable! Thanks to Brittany’s diligence and perseverance, my husband underwent a double-balloon colonoscopy the following day, revealing a medical issue previously not accessible with a routine colonoscopy. This timely intervention underscores the critical importance of Brittany’s actions, ensuring my husband’s health and well-being were first and foremost.

Brittany’s exemplary service, clinical skills, compassion, remarkable resourcefulness, and unwavering dedication to patient-centered care epitomize the qualities of the “DAISY Award”. I am profoundly grateful for her exceptional contributions and support through challenging times. Brittany’s remarkable efforts have undoubtedly made a meaningful and lasting impact on our experience at UM!
