Brenda is compassionate. Brenda is skilled. Brenda heard us. Brenda cared about the entire family, including the patient.
Our family member, J, was in a hit and run accident on his motorcycle, leading to multiple injuries including a leg amputation. J’s entire team of caretakers was all amazing, but Brenda really stood out. Brenda never made us feel like she was too busy for us, although it was clear she was very busy. She took time to answer our questions, and when she didn’t know the answer, she always offered to reach out to the doctor for us. When we were worried that we were too stressed to remember what they told us on rounds, she would always remember and tell us. Brenda was extremely compassionate in her care for J. She always explained to J what his care plan was. She recognized his level of pain and never tried to downplay it. Even when J was completely loopy, Brenda would still talk to him about his hobbies and work. When we told J what a great team he had taking care of him, Brenda pointed out that the family was part of his excellent care team. Brenda was a fantastic source of support not just for J but the entire family. Whenever we asked Brenda about something we thought was a change, she immediately checked on it and told us whether it was something concerning. For instance, one morning, I noticed something on J’s leg that looked like mold. Brenda examined it and immediately referred it to the doctors who came in to look at it. Brenda is compassionate. Brenda is skilled. Brenda heard us. Brenda cared about the entire family, including the patient. Even after J moved out of the ICU to the Stepdown and then PCU, Brenda would make a point of dropping by to check in on all of us. Brenda truly cares about her patients. Her compassion helped all of us during this difficult time.
