The amount of time, compassion, and trust that Wendy has built with this patient has been nothing short of amazing.
We had a patient who was admitted to our unit. This patient was homeless and lived in a motel that she would be unable to return to when she was discharged from the hospital. The patient had no ID, Social Security card, or insurance. Therefore, placement for this patient would be very difficult.
While the patient did have family members, she did not talk to them. She does not trust her family, so it made things difficult when it came to obtaining the information that we needed to help the patient get placement. Wendy went out of her way to obtain all of the information that was needed. In order to get her set up with Social Security, we needed documentation of her husband's death and much more. Since the patient did not want to see her family, getting them to deliver these documents to the hospital was somewhat challenging.
Wendy, on her day off from work, ended up meeting the patient's daughter in Kaplan in order to obtain some of the much-needed paperwork. Wendy worked with the patient to complete and sign the SS and Medicare application. The patient needed an ID to complete the process. Wendy arranged for the patient to be brought to the DMV office to get her ID. Wendy has spent so much time with this patient. She has been a constant in her care since she has been in the hospital. Wendy has developed a relationship with the patient. She has built up her trust with the patient. The patient looks forward to visits from Wendy.
The patient has been in the hospital for over 66 days. You can now see Wendy spending time with the patient. Taking the patient for a stroll down the hallway in a wheelchair. She has brought her outside to enjoy the weather. They have made trips to the vending machine and the gift shop together. If there is one thing you know about Wendy, it is that she does not like elevators. She will always take the stairs. However, for this patient, Wendy is willing to get into the elevator and take her on trips around the hospital. The amount of time, compassion, and trust that Wendy has built with this patient has been nothing short of amazing.
