Without question, April stepped up and agreed to have the newborn admitted with the mother on Labor and Delivery so the mother and father could be with their newborn during its final hours.
April was working when we had a recently delivered patient who needed to be admitted to our unit for postpartum bleeding. What complicated this situation was that the newborn was admitted at Children's Hospital and had recently been placed on hospice. In an effort to not only care for the mother's medical needs, but also allow for the mother and father to be with their baby while it passed, it was decided that the newborn would also transfer to Nebraska Medicine with the mother so they could both be at Nebraska Medicine. There was discussion about whether the newborn should be admitted to the NICU and stay in the NICU under NICU care or if they newborn should be admitted to normal newborn since it was comfort care. Without question, April stepped up and agreed to have the newborn admitted with the mother on Labor and Delivery so the mother and father could be with their newborn during its final hours. April's display of the ITEACH values in this moment were above and beyond exceptional and she is truly deserving of this recognition for the care she gave and the experience she allowed these parents to have.

She was at the bedside and cared for their whole well-being. When asked to check if the newborn had passed, she didn't hesitate to call the NNPs. When the parents asked, after the newborn had passed, that she let their visitors know and to have the newborn be taken out of the room before their visitors came in (so they wouldn't remember their baby like that), she showed immense courage and compassion delivering the news to their visitors. The NNP who was on specifically noted how fantastic April was despite the circumstances, in caring for the newborn while it passed, and in caring for the mother's medical needs, and the family's needs. April truly exemplified all the values we want in any nurse at Nebraska Medicine, and we are lucky to have her working on our Labor and Delivery Team!
