As an employee at Nebraska Medicine, I am used to hearing stories about collogues embodying the core values of Nebraska Medicine, but it is one thing to hear the remarks secondhand than to experience them. From the start, my interactions with Nurse Debbie were phenomenal. It started when I was referred by my primary care physician for an endoscopy/coloscopy to check for a malabsorption issue. Initially, I was offered an appointment for the next week, and when I had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict, I was told the next available wouldn't be until months later. Debbie put me on a cancellation list and kept me updated so that I was able to get in a matter of weeks later vs months. The day before my appointment, when it was time to prep, I accidentally messed up the instructions and worried that I would have to cancel. I called Debbie, but she was already off for the day, and each number I called after her provided no help. In the midst of my panic, Debbie called me from her personal cell after her work hours and provided me with the steps for an alternate method. She kept up to date with me throughout the process and even texted me at 2 am to make sure everything was going smoothly. After the procedure, she texted me and told me she read the operation notes, everything was excellent, and to take time to rest. My experience with Debbie blew me away! I raved to all of my family members about how caring and diligent she was. She is someone who is clearly passionate about her job and helping patients. I could only wish every healthcare provider I encounter has even a fraction of her passion. I don't think there is a more deserving recipient of the DAISY Award than her.
