When we arrived at the facility, Christy quickly settled us into our delivery room. The patient told her that she had used an epidural during her previous two deliveries but desired to deliver naturally this time. Christy immediately recognized that the patient needed some personal, tender coaching during her delivery in order to achieve her goal of delivering naturally. Christy encouraged the mom to take each contraction one at a time. She helped her identify the "top" of her contractions and provided helpful breathing techniques. "Mom" reached the point again that she "couldn't do it" and wanted to give up. Christy reminded "mom" of her goals, and it helped her to keep going. "Her personal care went above and beyond her job responsibilities." "Her technical skills and experience made the difference for us." We found out later that Christy was not required to be in our delivery room and that she was certainly not responsible for coaching "mom" through her delivery.
