Mrs. Lehner's compassion extended beyond the physical and emotional well-being of her students.
In the heart of a bustling town, nestled within the walls of a vibrant school, there lived a school nurse whose compassion and care knew no bounds. Her name was Mrs. Catherine Lehner, and to the students, she was not just a nurse but a beacon of comfort and support.
Every morning, as the sun cast its golden rays upon Farnsworth School, Mrs. Lehner patiently awaits her students for their morning meds and blood glucose checks. She knew each student by name and greeted them with genuine kindness. For many, her office became a sanctuary—a place where worries melted away and healing began.
One chilly morning, a young boy named H shuffled into Mrs. Thompson's office, clutching his arm in pain. Tears welled up in his eyes as he explained how he had fallen during recess. Without hesitation, Mrs. Thompson gently examined his arm, soothing his fears with her calm demeanor. H frequents the nurse’s office to meet his untraditional feeding needs.
"It's just a scratch, H," she reassured him, her voice soft and reassuring. "We'll get you patched up in no time."
With tender care, she bandaged his arm and offered him a comforting smile. Nurse Cathy called home and gently let Mom know of the incident. H left her office feeling not only relieved but also filled with a sense of warmth and security.
As the days went by, Mrs. Lehner continued to be a pillar of strength for the students. When R and her group of friends come in for their daily glucose checks, Nurse Cathy has created a warm and comforting environment for them, while offering words of encouragement and a listening ear. Nurse Cathy has mastered the art of guggling feedings, glucose checks, and the needs of various scrapes and ice pack needs.
But Mrs. Lehner's compassion extended beyond the physical and emotional well-being of her students. She is an integral part of our school team and has demonstrated a willingness to provide a high level of care to the students that is above and beyond the job description of a School Nurse. When a student with an intellectual disability in the Severe/Profound range, displayed extreme agitation and discomfort on the CPS School Bus, Nurse Cathy rode all the way home with the student to assure safe delivery to the family.
We here at Farnworth School of Chicago, Illinois would like to formally nominate Nurse Cathy Lehner for the DAISY Nursing Award, as she exudes exemplary leadership and support to our students.
