We had a challenging comfort care patient on 3 west that was there for over a month who was really fighting letting go despite her suffering. The patient's husband was also difficult to deal with at times and needed security escort every time he arrived. She developed a rapport with the husband, and I heard him say that she was the only one who treated him like a normal person, wasn't afraid of him, and made him feel seen like he mattered. She often helped out with this patient even when she wasn't part of her assignment, having other patients of her own to care for. She showed genuine concern and had been seen going into the room and assisting in care or responding to the patient's cries, even when it wasn't her responsibility. When the time came that this patient did pass, the doctor told the staff that the news to the patient's family might come better from the staff, so she, not being her patient for the day - made the call and gave the patient's husband the news. She went above and beyond for this patient and her family, as well as the staff. She shows true heart and dedication every day, always with a smile and infectious laugh that brings so much joy to the unit. She is inspiring to work with, and I'm so happy and proud she is part of our team.
