Maxi Trigueno has been showing her leadership as a nurse on our unit. She always goes the extra mile for our patients. Recently, Maxi took the initiative and assumed care for a patient from Bellevue who was five days post-partum. The Patient was transferred to L&D from the ED with symptoms of pre-eclampsia, elevated blood pressures, and shortness of breath. Maxi took the report and started the patient assessment immediately when the patient arrived on the unit. Maxi's swift critical thinking assessment determined that the patient's lung sounds were decreasing. The patient was unstable, and Maxi continued to reassess and administer the prescribed medication. Maxi, along with a fellow nurse, advocated for a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to be called. The RRT was initiated and notified by nursing. The RRT confirmed the patient was experiencing pulmonary flash edema and required escalated care to the CCU. The patient was very emotional at this time. Maxi took the lead and explained all the procedures and processes as it was happening to the patient. Maxi inquired about the patient's family members to find out if anyone would be coming to visit her in the hospital and showed compassion and moral support. The Patient was calm and, considered Maxi a blessing, and thanked her for not leaving her side.

While, Maxi exhibited nursing leadership, compassion, and patient advocacy in that very moment, this was her normal behavior. We were very proud to be her colleague. She is always in action and doing what she was born to do, being a Maternal Child Health Nurse. She is such a great role model for our nurses here at Harlem Hospital. We are very proud of what our L&D has accomplished.
