Shannon picked up some day shifts and spent the day (and her own personal funds) arranging to help lift the patient’s spirits with spa time (nail painting and facials in addition to stellar nursing care of patient’s hygiene – oral/body).
The patient is a quad and unable to communicate with her voice. Shannon took her time reading her lips and going the extra mile for this patient. Shannon picked up some day shifts and spent the day (and her own personal funds) arranging to help lift the patient’s spirits with spa time (nail painting and facials in addition to stellar nursing care of patient’s hygiene – oral/body). Shannon made a major difference in this patient’s spirits and rehab progress as a result! Last night, however, Shannon saved this patient’s life. The patient was to be discharged, and she helped the patient with belongings by escorting the patient to transport. During transport out, respiratory decline was noted by Shannon due to a transport vent malfunction and she immediately instructed the transporting crew to return to the STICU. The issue was addressed, and the patient was attended to immediately and efficiently. Had Shannon not been there to drive care and protect our trauma patient, the outcome would have been very different. She stood by the patient and ensured that all equipment was functioning effectively and properly before attempting discharge again. Additionally, she called over to the receiving facility to ensure the patient arrived safely and was doing well. This is what STICU nursing is all about – Shannon was a total Rockstar and I’m proud to have her as part of our trauma team.
