Her diligence not only de-escalated the patient but also saved his nurse from the verbal abuse he had been heaping on all who entered his room.
I have watched Jessica Groenke grow into her leadership position as a charge nurse. As a chaplain, I regularly see her interacting with unit nurses, patients, families, and staff from other interdisciplinary teams. I also encountered her in the ED, where she regularly checks in with incoming traumas. I have always witnessed Jessica to be caring in her interactions with others and willing to help the nurses on her unit. I was very impressed a few weeks ago with her patience and skill at de-escalating a particularly difficult patient. The patient was verbally abusive to the nurse assigned to him as well as this chaplain. He was demanding to leave AMA but was not considered decisional. Jessica was able to approach him and speak in a calm manner, which helped him to see the need to stay a while longer until the medical team could make rounds and reevaluate him. The patient would calm down and then rapidly escalate again. Jessica was able to continue to maintain a calm demeanor with him. Her diligence not only de-escalated the patient but also saved his nurse from the verbal abuse he had been heaping on all who entered his room. I look forward to seeing where Jessica’s talents take her in the future. Her caring and nurturing demeanor helps those around her to feel welcome. Her willingness to help the nurses on her unit provides an atmosphere of camaraderie, teamwork, and growth. SSM Health and SLUH are blessed to have her on staff.
