Ibby came into the room, introduced himself, and asked if there was anything that the family needed. We had a difficult situation regarding the discharge to rehab process, and Ibby tried to help us resolve that issue.
Our 88-year-old family member was a patient for a little over three weeks. She came in with heart, lung, and kidney problems and had a number of doctors trying to find the right balance of meds for her. We didn't know from one day to the next what we would be facing. She was finally released to a rehab facility and hopes to be going home soon. We especially wanted to recognize Nurse Ibby, whom she had on her last two days there. Ibby came into the room, introduced himself, and asked if there was anything that the family needed. We had a difficult situation regarding the discharge to rehab process, and Ibby tried to help us resolve that issue. We had initially given the names of three rehab facilities (with our preferences in order) when she was ready to be discharged, and she was initially accepted at two of them. The third facility accepted her later, but we learned that they had an outbreak of COVID-19, so it was no longer our first choice. We informed the Nursing/Social Work staff of our change in preference immediately, but, unfortunately, we were informed on Thursday of the following week that she was being discharged that day and sent to the facility with COVID-19. The social worker did not come down until very late that afternoon, and we were adamant that we did not want her to be transferred there, but the social worker said it could not be changed. Ibby came into the room and attempted to resolve the issue, but we said we could not agree to the transfer to the Covid facility and due to the late hour, they decided they would keep her until the following day. A family member who works at another rehab facility called the patient's insurance and was told it could be changed, and we provided the name, phone number, and reference number to the social worker to confirm this. The next morning, we learned that the social worker had not made the call on Thursday, but it did eventually get made, and the transfer was approved to the appropriate facility. Ibby again came into the room on Friday and asked several times if there was anything he could do for us. He was very thorough in making sure transportation was set up and that we knew when she would be going to the rehab facility. After we had gone to the rehab facility to await her arrival, Ibby contacted us to provide updated information about a delay in the transfer. Ibby was the kind of nurse you would want to have for your family member and to support the family as well.
