When it was time for the haircut, Crystal was right there by her side to assist in positioning and ensuring she was comfortable, as Mama was not as strong. This was not a part of her nursing role, but she was compelled to make this happen, and she went beyond the call of duty.
Life begins...life ends. Impressions never end. In our last days with Mama, we were faced with the devastating news of her cancer diagnosis. She passed within 10 days of her finally being diagnosed. During that time, she received outstanding care from the nursing staff. One exceptional nurse was Crystal Burnett. When Mama was admitted, she was focused on wanting a haircut. Our plan was to take her when she was discharged. When we realized she might transition to Interim Care in an attempt to get her stronger to go home with family, we decided to try to get her hair cut while in the hospital. We did not know at the time her cancer was going to be so aggressive.
We contacted several people, but they could not come. Her nurse told us if we would like, she could try to get a friend from Asheboro to come. This was above her role of providing patient care to Mama and far exceeded our expectations. It was astounding that she was willing to take extra time to assist in meeting the total patient wants/needs. She was able to get her friend to come on the weekend when she was working. Mama looked forward to getting her hair cut all week. Needless to say, our world was soon altered when the cancer started shutting off her liver. Crystal was very compassionate when caring for Mama and the family. We felt her concern, as she knew we were facing a very emotional time in our lives as we approached Mama's final days. She always took the time to listen and address any concerns. She was constantly focusing on her comfort and trying to make sure she had everything she wanted/needed.
Crystal always demonstrated her concern for the family too and never presented in a rushed manner. She always had time to talk and share special things. She even shared her experiences of losing a loved one and the process of having something special the person held in the end. She recommended bringing a blanket or other item that would be the last thing she touched to have for our memories. How special! She was focused on total care for everyone and making sure we were ALL comfortable. She has a passion for nursing as was evident in the care and emotional support provided. Chatham should be proud to have her on the staff.
During her final days, Crystal frequently checked to make sure Mama was not anxious or in pain. She was quick to provide meds as needed and always followed up to make sure she didn't need to give additional meds. The family was very impressed with her care during Mama's final days, and I know Mama was proud of the care she received during this time.
