Luckily, that day, her nurse happened to be Shannon. She saw beyond the medical needs of the family that day and did everything in her power to make sure that sweet girl was able to make it to her dance.
There are many times as a nurse when you truly wish to help your patients beyond the walls of the hospital. During a recent shift in the Women’s Center, a very sick, single mother had an unexpected admission and would need to stay several days. In doing so, her daughter would miss her very first middle school dance. This mother was willing to leave without the treatment she so desperately needed to put the needs of her child first. Luckily, that day, her nurse happened to be Shannon. She saw beyond the medical needs of the family that day and did everything in her power to make sure that sweet girl was able to make it to her dance. With the mother’s permission, she made all the arrangements to not only get this girl to her dance but bought her several dresses (a girl needs options!) shoes, jewelry, and whatever else she needed. She also enlisted the help of several others that day. A doctor did her hair and makeup. One co-worker made sure all the “legal forms/permission slips” were obtained. Another came in on her day off to take professional photos. A nurse drove our “Belle to the Ball,” and the nurse went back late that night to pick her up and return her to her mother’s hospital room. Several others were also around that day to tie up loose ends and help her get ready. I wish you could have seen the light in that little girl’s face, she was so happy and looked like a million bucks. None of this would have been possible without this very special nurse. Sure, when I learned of the family’s predicament that morning, I felt bad, but it would have never crossed my mind that we’d be able to help them in this way. For as long as I have known this nurse, she has been a caring and compassionate nurse. There have been so many occasions where she has gone above and beyond in the care of her patients, but this is probably the most extravagant. I am so thankful to not only call her an incredible coworker but also a wonderful friend.
