That one act alone made me feel so seen and so valued— I know she had a full rotation of patients, but she never made me feel like she needed to rush out or get elsewhere.
I was admitted into postpartum at 31 weeks after being diagnosed with preeclampsia with super high blood pressure. I stayed in the postpartum wing for three weeks before being induced, and during that time, Emery was truly a lifesaver. I was admitted due to super high blood pressure, and Emery went out of her way to share stories of her own childbirth experience to help calm me down. There was one particular day when my blood pressure spiked again due to some stressful encounters with one of the nurse assistants, so Emery made it a point of coming in to take my vitals herself in order to keep both the baby and me calm and safe. That one act alone made me feel so seen and so valued— I know she had a full rotation of patients, but she never made me feel like she needed to rush out or get elsewhere. She treated me like I was the most important human on earth, which is one of the reasons I was able to handle being in the hospital for those 3 weeks so well. She came and checked on me at the beginning and end of every shift, left notes on my whiteboard to help me focus on breathing and staying calm, and even put up a “do not disturb! Check with Emery first!” sign after one particularly exhausting day because she knew I just needed to sleep between NSTs and blood pressure checks. I truly don’t think my mental health would have been so positive if it were not for Emery— it was an absolute blessing to have her. She even stopped over at the NICU to meet our beautiful girl and check in on her during our NICU stay. So many times, it’s easy to feel like “just another patient” when it comes to doctors and nurses, but Emery always made me feel so important. I’ll never forget her kindness and compassion during the most challenging weeks of my life— I am forever grateful she was assigned to me that first day!!
