He repeatedly talked about how she just listened to him, helped him feel heard, and didn’t rush.  He knew she was busy, but he felt like he was her only patient.
During Nurse Leader rounds, I visited Mr. L in Observation Care. He saw the DAISY Award on the TV in his room and wanted to make sure Hannah was nominated. As L and I chatted, it became clear that he has led an incredibly full life and worked on weapons systems, “nukes,” radar tracking systems, etc. He has a passion for detail and perfection.

He was so impressed with Hannah.  He repeatedly talked about how she just listened to him, helped him feel heard, and didn’t rush.  He knew she was busy, but he felt like he was her only patient.  L needed an external catheter.  He has a very successful routine at home for external catheter use, but the ones in Saddleback were not working for him.  He said Hannah was so considerate and flexible.  She listened to how his routine worked at home and explored all the options we offer at Saddleback.  In the end, the best option for L was to use the products from home with the routine he has at home.  Hannah helped this happen for him.  L was so grateful to be heard, have his preferences considered, and most of all, avoid the embarrassment of a mishap.

He also commented that the MD communication on the weekend leaves much to be desired.  He attributes some of his excellent care to Hanna and her persistence in reaching the doctors.  He said she kept him informed and just kept trying until they responded.

Hannah, while I’m submitting this on behalf of L, it has truly been a joy to have you join our 1E family.  I’m excited to see what this next year brings for you.
