Carrie sat down next to the patient (at his eye level) to discuss why it was important to stay in the hospital as he was on triple antibiotics and at great risk of losing his life if he were to leave.
Carrie Bernes went above and beyond what many would do for a patient. Carrie was taking care of a particularly difficult patient. He was an addict who was homeless, being seen for a deep necrotic wound. Carrie took the time to treat him with the most kindness and respect, regardless of his socioeconomic status. This particular patient often leaves against medical advice, which leads to the worsening of his health condition. Carrie took the time to explain to the patient the importance of each aspect of his medical care. She walked him through his dressing change, provided him with snacks, and helped make him comfortable throughout the day.

When the patient was determined to leave against medical advice, Carrie sat down next to the patient (at his eye level) to discuss why it was important to stay in the hospital as he was on triple antibiotics and at great risk of losing his life if he were to leave. She sat down next to him, listened to his concerns, and validated his feelings about his hospital stay. When the patient determined that he was officially leaving against medical advice, Carrie ensured that he left with a fresh pair of clothes, socks, and wound care supplies. She reached out to the social worker to arrange a cab ride for him to drop him off where he chose to go. She wheeled him out to the front with a backpack with snacks, Gatorade, and a change of pants. She demonstrated compassion, kindness, and empathy without prejudice. She truly is what Florence Nightingale envisioned the nursing profession would become!
