Ms. Droessler did not give up on this Veteran and consistently provided regular check ins and calls to further assist with their mental health and care coordination/case management.
Ms. Droessler has been working with Veterans and serving as a Lead Coordinator and Mental Health RN. She began working with a Veteran recently. This was a Veteran who struggled with alcoholism and depression and had been flagged as high-risk for past suicide attempts. The Veteran was not engaging in healthcare due to the addiction and struggled with chronic depression and pain. Ms. Droessler did not give up on this Veteran and consistently provided regular check ins and calls to further assist with their mental health and care coordination/case management. She continued to build rapport and form a trusting partnership with the Veteran and encouraged them to remain sober to be able to address some ongoing health problems causing pain, which had further resulted in increased alcohol consumption as a coping method. As of September 2024, this Veteran celebrated one year of sobriety, was able to have the surgery they needed, and had the high-risk suicide flag removed from their chart. The Veteran recently shared with Ms. Droessler, “It is comforting knowing you are checking in on me, you truly are a gift”. Danielle Droessler, RN, has shown that through perseverance and commitment, positive outcomes can happen when we choose not to give up on a Veteran who may be struggling.
