Angela employed a pain therapy strategy of distracting me by engaging in extensive conversation with me - and it worked!
I have had four surgeries requiring overnight stays at three different hospitals. I have had good nursing care, but I never had such outstanding and persistent care as provided by Angela Batista, and it was dearly needed. Angela is the consummate professional.
On Saturday, I had significant blood clotting in my urethra, causing a complete blockage with considerable abdominal pain that brought me to the Retreat ER. The blockage was relieved by manual irrigation, resulting in an “explosion “ of blood all over me. Then, a CBI (Continual Bladder Irrigation) system was set up. I was assigned overnight to the floor under Angela Batista’s care. Because of the considerable pain associated with the blood clotting blockage and the continued appearance of clots, even with the CBI, I was very anxious and concerned that another blockage would recur. In my previous hospital stays, nurses would check on me every hour or so. It was quickly apparent that this was going to lead to significant problems.
Angela responded extremely well to my situation by being super attentive, checking on me about every 15 minutes for the first 5 hours. I was on the floor until the appearance of clots slowed. In this time, Angela cleared many blood clots before they became a blockage. It was a remarkable performance, very appreciative, and gave me confidence that I would get through the night.
Additionally, as the blood clotting potential seemed to dissipate, I started to experience very painful bladder spasms. And I am not a “sissy,” but I had never experienced anything like this significant discomfort. This is where Angela once again showed her professional skills. It was going to be a while before medication to alleviate the spasms could be prescribed and delivered to my floor. So, Angela employed a pain therapy strategy of distracting me by engaging in extensive conversation with me - and it worked! The pain from the spasms seemed to be reduced until the medication arrived. Angela cared enough to stay with me for a considerable length of time. I was greatly appreciative!
I am afraid my writing skills are not good enough to effectively portray Angela's remarkable 12 hours of unrelenting attention and care during a very traumatic time for me. I am forever indebted to Angela for her wonderful care! Retreat Hospital is very fortunate to have such an outstanding professional on your staff!
