She made sure that she went into the room with the doctor and my aunt on speakerphone. She held my grandmother's hand and sat with her while the doctor explained what was going on.
My grandmother was admitted to Northside Cherokee for low sodium. This was her 2nd bout of issues related to low sodium in the last few months. She was admitted to the 10th floor, and the doctors immediately started trying to figure out what was causing the issue. Misty was my grandmother's admitting nurse, and she was a breath of fresh air from our first encounter. She made a connection with all of my family members and made my grandmother, who can be a somewhat stubborn patient, comfortable and relaxed. We have been staying with my grandmother around the clock since her last admission to another facility. Misty’s skills and quality care made my aunt feel comfortable enough to go home for the night knowing that Misty and the rest of the 10th-floor team would take good care of her. Unfortunately, my grandmother's CT results came back with some bad news overnight. Misty asked to care for my grandmother again the next day to ensure she was there to support her when she received the test results. That morning, when the Dr rounded, my aunt had not made it back to the hospital yet. Misty knew the doctor was coming in to give my grandmother a diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer with Mets to the liver and lymph nodes, and she knew that there was no family with her. She quickly had the doctor wait while she tried to get one of us on the phone. She made sure that she went into the room with the doctor and my aunt on speakerphone. She held my grandmother's hand and sat with her while the doctor explained what was going on. She helped explain things in a way my grandmother understood, and even after the doctor left, she continued to sit with her until she was able to relax. Misty made sure to give her something to help with her anxiety and checked on her frequently until my family could get there. We are forever grateful to Misty for recognizing that no one should have to be alone when they are told they only have months to live. She is a wonderful nurse who is able to connect with her patients and their family members as if they were old friends, and it is clear she truly cares about others.
