This patient took a turn for the better, and when we saw him on another visit, he was clean-shaven and well-dressed. He appreciates Laura so much that he comes in for the holidays to deliver cards for the unit and a separate one for Laura.
I have known Laura for approximately 3 years, and in my career of 39 years, I have never witnessed a nurse who is so loved by all her patients. When Laura looks after patients, she gives her 100% and goes beyond what a patient comes to the unit for. She makes them all feel valued.
Example 1: Patient N came to the unit for a day procedure, and from this, Laura was able to get a social worker involved to deal with his housing, transportation, and housework issues, etc. (he was on our unit for a day procedure, and she found out that he didn't have a phone and had difficulties coming to his appointments, etc.). This patient took a turn for the better, and when we saw him on another visit, he was clean-shaven and well-dressed. He appreciates Laura so much that he comes in for the holidays to deliver cards for the unit and a separate one for Laura. We received two at Christmas and two at Easter.
Example 2: A patient’s family donated to the foundation on behalf of Laura and staff of the medical day unit after a patient had passed as she was very involved in their care.
Example 3: Patient L sent a letter to the management team and spoke highly about the staff of medical day unit and wrote, "I found Laura to be the most energetic and caring nurse".
Example 4: She is a strong advocate for patients and staff and volunteered to be the nurse representative for the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell working group at TGH.
These are only a few examples of Laura's outstanding empathy and advocacy as a nurse. When I mention Laura to patients, they answer, "I just love Laura."
