D.J. is a leader who embodies compassion, mutual respect, an “open door” policy, and a nurse leader who makes everyone feel comfortable approaching him with their concerns without fear of punitive measures or admonishment.
My younger sister attempted to take her own life, and I had to emergently leave my shift on the NSICU an hour into work. My dad had previously completed suicide, so the entire ordeal was and continues to be extremely traumatic and distressing for myself and my family. Aside from being concerned about my sister, I was worried about having to leave work and potentially being out for a period of time, as I have personal health issues that have also impacted my ability to work consistently. When I spoke to D.J. the next morning and explained what happened, our family’s history with suicide, and how I was feeling, I was met with such compassion, understanding, and warmth. D.J. reminded me that he was available if I had any concerns, and emphasized to me that work should not be an immediate concern.

Beyond a work standpoint, D.J. showed a genuine concern for my well-being and how I would process and move through this traumatic event, briefly counseling me and encouraging me to seek support when needed. D.J. is a leader who embodies compassion, mutual respect, an “open door” policy, and a nurse leader who makes everyone feel comfortable approaching him with their concerns without fear of punitive measures or admonishment.

Furthermore, he has been wholly supportive of me and others as we work towards nursing degrees, accommodating us so that we can handle both academic and work commitments without excess stress. Throughout this most recent issue in my life and family, I am so beyond grateful for D.J. and his leadership and feel wholeheartedly he is so deserving of this DAISY Award.
