Simegn’s ability to connect with us on a personal level, while still providing top notch medical care, made a difficult time much more bearable.
I would like to nominate Simegn for the DAISY Award for the extraordinary care she provided to my father, a Marine Veteran who recently underwent a right leg amputation. It’s important to understand who she was taking care of. My father is a man whose life has been defined by resilience and strength. He grew up as one of five brothers in the hills of Kentucky, enduring incredible hardship after his mother left when he was just two years old. He relied on the kindness of neighbors during harsh blizzards as he walked home from school, and he worked to survive by shelling walnuts at a junkyard for burlap bags to cover up with and he begged for food behind restaurants. Despite these challenges, my father joined the Marines and built an incredible life of service and perseverance. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune, where he ultimately spent nine months in the hospital due to kidney failure- now known to be caused by poisoned water. My dad is also a proud father of three, grandfather of three, and great-grandfather of two. Four generations bear his namesake, a testament to the legacy he has built through his determination and love for his family.

Simegn demonstrated clinical excellence from the moment she was assigned to my father for his care. Simegn carefully monitored his condition, ensuring that his wound was healing properly and that his pain was well managed. Her attentiveness extended to the smallest details, like promptly addressing loud alarms from the IV infusions, getting him fresh water, calming him with her presence, which reassured us that he was in highly capable hands. What truly set Simegn apart was her compassion. She greeted my father each day with warmth, always taking the time to converse with him and our family with kindness. She made a point to thank him for his service, a gesture that deeply touched us all and made him feel honored. Simegn’s ability to connect with us on a personal level, while still providing top notch medical care, made a difficult time much more bearable.

At every encounter, she went above and beyond. Whether it was making sure my father was comfortable, educating us about his care, or offering a comforting smile, her dedication to his well-being was unwavering. Her unique combination of clinical skill and heartfelt compassion makes her an exemplary nurse, and we are deeply grateful for the care she provided. As my father experiences health hardships, we are elated that Simegn has been a champion on his care team for her understanding of the importance of who she was caring for and her unwavering compassion. I wholeheartedly nominate Simegn for the DAISY Award. She truly deserves recognition; our family will always be thankful for her kindness and dedication. Thank you, Simegn, for making a difference in our lives and for being a true advocate for your patients.

Note: This is Simegn's 2nd DAISY Award!
