I will never forget those touches of humanity and compassion.
TJ Chicas is an extraordinary nurse. Let me preface this nomination by saying that it is currently well past midnight, and instead of trying to catch up on some much-needed sleep; there is nothing more I’d like to do than fill out this nomination singing the praises of TJ before I head back to ICU in the morning.
Watching the rapport that TJ has with my father is so endearing to me. If you have ever met my father, you would definitely remember him. He is jovial, gregarious, and never meets a stranger (even when in ICU). TJ was able to match my dad’s energy while even supplying some much-needed quips of her own. She not only provided outstanding care for my father but also shared techniques and tips on how to help me care for my mobility-limited mother. Techniques such as using a belt around my mother’s torso to help guide her more safety than grabbing clothing which can lead to falls. TJ even went so far as to bring us cups of ice and drinks during those long days of visiting with Dad when having lunch or dinner is the furthest thing on your mind. The fact that she noticed and, to quote her, “I know you have been here a while and could use this.” It touched my heart. I will never forget those touches of humanity and compassion. When she told me one morning that she was going to be there the next day to care for Dad, I spontaneously burst into tears of relief and felt a tremendous weight lift off of me, knowing that Dad was going to be in great hands for another day under TJ’s vigilant care.
Florence Nightingale may be credited as the pioneer of modern nursing, but in my book, Florence has nothing on TJ. She is living proof of an answered prayer. My angel in ICU.
Note: This is TJ's 2nd DAISY Award!
