Kevin has been a nurse for a little under a year but already possesses the core elements that make up an excellent nurse. Some say nursing is more prominent in females due to a stereotype that women have a stronger caregiver mentality, alluding to the notion that men lack compassionate traits. However, Kevin sets an example of how a caring attitude is not based on gender roles but comes from a good heart.  

Recently, Kevin cared for an elderly woman with end-stage COPD and a poor prognosis. The patient had a few orders to help treat her dyspnea, pain, and anxiety in her final days. For several days, Kevin advocated for this patient to receive some relief from her suffering through medicinal support and sought hospice Consultation. One morning, Kevin noticed a bleak change in his patient and did not hesitate to follow the chain of command to help her. With family and hospice on the way, the only thing we could do to support the patient was to remain present. Several nurses offered to stay with her so Kevin could attend to his other patients. However, Kevin refused to leave her side, hovering the oxygen mask above her face and holding her hand. I believe Kevin's heroic act of compassion kept her alive and allowed her to see her family one last time. Even after she passed away a mere hour later, Kevin extended his caring attributes to the family, ensuring their comfort in a difficult time.  

As nurses, we never stop learning new skills and knowledge. But some things cannot be taught, and that is the good nursing qualities within us. Kevin, although a young nurse in his career, will accomplish great achievements with his strong characteristics of caring and compassion for both patients and their families.
