Mr M spent the remainder of his life at the Abraham House, and Shannon was by his side as often as she could and with his last breath.
We would like to nominate Shannon Carpenter, LPN in the Rome CBOC, for DAISY recognition for demonstrating extraordinary compassionate care. Shannon is a PACT LPN and was the first nurse Mr. M saw every time he came into the clinic for care. Approximately two years ago, Mr. M was diagnosed with colon cancer. Initially, he did not wish to share his diagnosis with his immediate family. Over the 2 year period, Shannon became his advocate, his voice, and she always went above and beyond assisting Mr. M. When he was told that treatments were failing, he opted for a second opinion at Sloan Kettering in NYC. His first trip to NYC, he got lost and missed his appointment, he called Shannon for help. She had him come to the clinic and assisted him in setting up GPS on his personal device and assisted with making his hotel reservations. He appreciated all of her help and was able to make his next appointment. Sadly, it was then that he would receive more bad news that there was nothing more that could be done. Shannon continued to assist him through the end of his life, she helped re-home his beloved dog and visited him after her shifts at the VA during the two weeks he received hospice care. Mr M spent the remainder of his life at the Abraham House, and Shannon was by his side as often as she could and with his last breath. As his obituary read, "The family wishes to thank the Hospice staff and caregivers at the Abraham House for their kindness given to P during his brief stay. They would also like to extend a special thank you to Shannon Carpenter for her devotion and compassion to P for the past several years.” Shannon is a dedicated nurse who cares for all of our veterans with compassion and empathy. She shows up every day and models her caring attitude.
