Because she and all of us liked him so much, we requested John to be my mother‘s nurse again when he came back on shift the Friday she passed.
John was an amazing nurse for my mother, who was in the ICU and passed away. She had a heart attack and entered the ICU the previous Sunday, and John was her nurse for the first three days. He and my mother connected on day one. I remember her pointing at John and drawing a circle in the air, telling me that he was an angel and had a halo. She was so right! John listened to my mother and tried to understand her even though she was very weak. He tried so hard to make her comfortable and was constantly checking on her. She smiled when she saw him, and it was clear that she trusted him. All of our family did.
He was always in motion and with her and the other patient throughout his shifts. I hardly ever saw him rest, and I could tell that he was truly dedicated to his patients. He was so helpful and explained to us what was happening to my mother with her condition. He made such a difference for my mother in those last few days. Because she and all of us liked him so much, we requested John to be my mother‘s nurse again when he came back on shift the Friday she passed. We are so grateful that he was with her in those final hours, as he made all the difference. I remember his sense of humor and that he used to smile and joke with Mom. I could tell she appreciated that as she had a great sense of humor herself. John is so compassionate and I told him many times that it was wonderful to see him work, and I felt he had truly found his calling as a nurse. I will be forever grateful to him. Even though all of my mother’s care in the ICU was excellent, John really stood out. I will always remember him so fondly.
