On a night when things could have taken a wrong turn, they did not because Shannon made the executive decision based on what was best for everyone.
The nurse I am nominating is someone whose work ethic perseveres to maintain all aspects of nursing care while being an advocate to her fellow colleagues and an inspirational leader. As a floor nurse, one of the meaningful moments happened when I began my shift assigned to a patient with a severe change in her medical condition related to insulin management. Shannon was charge nurse and immediately became my right-hand person, offering support, reassurance and being present at all times. When the unit census anticipated to increase, she made the one difficult decision that professional leaders in my years of experience struggle with: balancing productivity while upholding the quality of patient care and workplace safety. It was then that I realized how Shannon considered the acuity of not only my assignment but the entire staff and called nurses in to help from the start. She could have increased my patient ratio and compromised the stability of this unique patient for productivity, but instead, she intervened by pulling resources and being accountable. Whether it was medicating a patient who was in pain, helping me contact the on-call provider, or assisting with the adult hypoglycemia protocol, her presence was unconditional. On a night when things could have taken a wrong turn, they did not because Shannon made the executive decision based on what was best for everyone. When a leader stops looking at people as numbers and prioritizes a highly coordinated environment in which all can prosper, it influences colleagues to collaborate as one. That night, we all became one strong team and I found myself saying "we" more than any other shift. It takes courage and skill to be such a visionary leader. Shannon upholds that recognition.
