Alexis entered my room, providing an immediate sense of relief. Her presence and contagious smile quickly eased all my anxiety.
I have been a registered nurse at this facility for eight years, but this past month, I found myself as a patient twice. During my first visit, I was evaluated in labor and delivery (L&D) for persistent nausea and vomiting, which resulted in an elevated heart rate for both me and my child, as well as contractions. My nurse, Alexis, advocated for me to receive fluids, anti-nausea medication, and to be assessed for possible pre-eclampsia. Initially, the doctor ordered only fluids, but Alexis was vigilant and attentive to my symptoms. She kept the doctor informed about my condition, leading to orders for lab tests and a 24-hour urine analysis. At first, I felt anxious about the visit due to how unwell I was feeling, uncertain of what to expect. I had delayed coming in for several days, thinking, 'I'm a nurse; I can handle this at home.' However, once I acknowledged that I needed help, Alexis swiftly addressed my dehydration and made me feel at ease.
Within the next few weeks, my water broke, and labor was imminent. I arrived at labor and delivery during the night shift and experienced some variable and late decelerations. The nurse assessing me was kind, but I didn't feel entirely reassured by her care. At 7 a.m., Alexis entered my room, providing an immediate sense of relief. Her presence and contagious smile quickly eased all my anxiety. Despite experiencing variable decelerations with her as well, Alexis swiftly responded each time by adjusting my position and helping my baby recover quickly. She explained everything in detail, repositioned me as needed, and ensured my baby was safe and healthy.
Alexis's ability to put a seasoned ER nurse at ease during such a daunting situation is a rare quality. She was there for me with every question or concern, assisting me throughout labor and the delivery of my beautiful, healthy son. I am deeply grateful for the exceptional care I received from Alexis during my labor. She is truly deserving of this award. I will always speak highly of my experience with Alexis and her department.
