You could see how happy the family and the patient were to be able to celebrate this momentous milestone not in the hospital room but outside.
This nurse is what every nurse at Children's should strive to be. He effectively delivers age-appropriate care. He makes families feel at ease when he's caring for their children. As a co-worker, he is someone I would be relieved to see as a pod mate. Especially if things were to go down with one of my own patients. As a direct report we could not ask for better.  Recently though he has outshone himself!

There was a medically complex patient with whom this nurse had developed a rapport, and he ended up as one of his primaries. He was there for months, and every shift this nurse worked, he took meticulous care of the patient and went above and beyond to make sure he was comfortable. His prognosis was poor, and his care complex, and despite it, he went through every shift to be the best nurse the patient could have. The patient had been in the SR PICU for months and was hoping to be out by graduation but, unfortunately, wasn't well enough to attend his own graduation. He was trach/vented, on CRRT, maxed on two pressors, and somehow, with his nurse and the providers by his side, the team took the patient to the garden to have a pseudo-graduation walk. You could see how happy the family and the patient were to be able to celebrate this momentous milestone not in the hospital room but outside. Without this nurse, this monumental task could not have been accomplished, which is why he deserves this DAISY Award.
