His compassion, his warm smile, and that little twinkle in his eye told us all we needed to know about who he sincerely is as a nurse and as a compassionate human.
My 12-year-old son was brought to OSF in the early morning hours. Scared and unsure of what was to come, we slept sporadically and finally became most alert around the time of the nurse shift change around 7:30 am. And that was when we were introduced to Nurse Bryce. WOW! Where to even begin about this incredible caregiver who was brought into our lives during the most uncertain, scariest hours of our lives? My son has Autism, and Bryce made sure to explain everything he was doing directly to my son, giving him autonomy and integrity despite his disability. He allowed him to "assist" in certain things when it was possible and appropriate because he figured out early on that allowing my son to be part of the process helped immensely with his cooperation. He was attentive to my son, myself, my husband, and the visitors we had. He asked what he could do for us, what he could get for us, how he could help us each and every time he was in the room. One of our visitors even commented about how fantastic he was! Our situation had the best possible outcome, but at the end of our stay, I fully came to realize just what Bryce deals with each day on the 6th floor. His compassion, his warm smile, and that little twinkle in his eye told us all we needed to know about who he sincerely is as a nurse and as a compassionate human. If he treats all of his patients the way he treated us (and I have no doubt he does), then OSF and its patients have struck gold.
