Julie Sprang was very kind, understanding, and compassionate to me throughout the night.
I came into the emergency room with a flare-up of my chronic Pancreatitis. I was in a lot of pain and had to have several blood tests and a CT scan to confirm that it was, in fact, a flare-up. Once everything was confirmed, the admissions department came in and said that they were just going to observe me and not admit me and leave. This was early in the morning. By this time, Julie Sprang was on duty and was my nurse. The first thing she did was come in and introduce herself to me. She said she would be taking care of me while I was still in the emergency room. She continued to check on me and make sure that I was okay and had everything that I needed. She explained all the test results, and what was happening so, I was not let in the dark. When the admissions came down and scared me by saying that they are not admitting me she explained I will not be left in the chairs in the emergency room but will be sent up to a regular room and and have normal care.

But while I was in Emergency Room, Julie took the time to answer all the questions I had on the tests and scans. She also took the time to explain what I should expect over the next few days to try and get my pancreas and pain under control. I came into the emergency room at 6:30 pm Friday and did not get into a room until 1 am Saturday. And then I did not get a room upstairs on the floor until 6 am Saturday.

Julie Sprang was very kind, understanding, and compassionate to me throughout the night. Especially since I was hurting, was upset, and did not understand what they were doing to me. When you are sick and sitting in the emergency room, and the admissions comes in and says we are not admitting you, and you know how serious your condition is it can really scare you. It is nurses like Julie that make a huge difference in where people go for care.

Where I live, I have the choice of going to UPMC Altoona or Bedford. This time, I am so glad that I chose Altoona and was able to have a nurse as caring as Julie there to take care of me. If we could pick out our own personal nurses to have for any visit to the hospital, be it an emergency room or admission, there is no doubt in my mind I would choose Julie Sprang every time. UPMC Altoona is so very lucky to have a nurse of her caliber working at your facility.
