She treated the family and patient with compassion, which I am confident they will never forget. She helped to ease their pain at the most difficult moment.
Barbara deserves this nomination for more reasons than one. She is a phenomenal nurse who demonstrates compassion, gentleness, and understanding with her patients and interdisciplinary care providers. Barbara consistently works hard to give patients and families the care they need. She goes above and beyond what is asked of her. One story in particular demonstrates her expertise, compassion for patients and families, and dedication.
Today, we had a patient whose status changed rapidly in a matter of minutes. It was decided rather quickly that the patient's family wanted to change the care plan and wanted to take the patient home. This all happened at the end of the day/shift. Barbara came back to work, after hours, when she received a call that the patient needed to be urgently discharged so they could have their final wishes respected. I called Barbara to update her of the change in status and asked for recommendations for education to give the family...not expecting her to still be present in-house. Barbara stated that she was in the parking garage walking out to her car but would come up immediately to talk with the family and patient. She was a blessing in the middle of a stressful and emotional situation for both the staff and family. Barbara went above and beyond to coordinate within 30 minutes. (This has to be some type of record!) She assisted this patient and family and was a valuable part of the health care team that day. She was able to help educate the family on end-of-life care and medication administration, while also helping set the patient up with home care (which is not an easy feat at the end of the day). In the end, this patient was able to be discharged home.
She treated the family and patient with compassion, which I am confident they will never forget. She helped to ease their pain at the most difficult moment. Barbara made an extremely challenging situation a little bit better, not only for our patient, but for the rest of the healthcare team. The family and patient were beyond thankful that they were able to accommodate their loved one's wishes. This story is just one that attests to Barbara's ability to go above and beyond for her patients and team. Her passion is inspiring to not only me but many other caregivers. Our patients, their families, and our team are fortunate to have her. Thank you, Barbara!!
