She displayed a great deal of empathy and compassion as I was upset that he was in such pain.
Another nurse was having difficulty inserting the urinary catheter for Dad. I was out of the room but entered when he began crying in great distress and discomfort for several minutes. I helped restrain his hands as the nurse repeatedly moved the catheter in and out several times but could not reach the bladder. Stressful indeed. She finally stopped and removed the catheter completely and stated she would get someone else to perform the procedure. I’ve seen the procedure performed before, and the duration is seconds, not over 5 minutes. I expressed my concern to Sandy. She was the 2nd nurse assigned to Dad after his arrival. She wasn’t assigned to Dad that day but kindly intervened. She stated she would perform the procedure. She displayed a great deal of empathy and compassion as I was upset that he was in such pain. She performed the procedure flawlessly. In less than 10 seconds, the Catheter was inserted. Her professionalism was exemplary. Her leadership in providing feedback to the first Nurse so she could learn from the experience achieved a positive outcome. Dad is a retired 20 yr veteran of the US Marines. He is used to pain after two tours in Vietnam. I’ve never heard him with that level of discomfort before. Thankfully, Sandy saved the day, and our family will be forever grateful.
