Gayle worked it out with the patient and the patient's mother for the patient to come to Riverside every 2-3 days for Gayle to change the wound vac herself, this went on for almost 3 weeks.
Gayle goes above and beyond for each and every one of her patients. Gayle has been with Carilion for over 40 years. Gayle has been with Plastic Surgery for 2+ years and works with Dr. J. She goes above for her patients by calling them to remind them of their appointments so they aren’t missed. If a patient doesn’t have the same availability as Dr. J, Gayle will work with both the patient and Dr. J to make sure the patient's care is a top priority! She always makes it work! She also takes on the role of working with other providers when another nurse is out of the office, and those patients love seeing Gayle. Gayle shows so much compassion for her patients and her job, not to mention all of her coworkers.
One story that shows Gayle’s true compassion and commitment for her patient - a patient was seen at an OSH, had surgery there, surgery did not go as planned so Dr. J was consulted and assumed that patients care, the patient needed a wound vac and was in need of HomeHealth. Gayle placed HomeHealth orders to multiple facilities and the patient was denied due to insurance coverage and HomeHealth not having any staff to help. Gayle worked it out with the patient and the patient's mother for the patient to come to Riverside every 2-3 days for Gayle to change the wound vac herself, this went on for almost 3 weeks. There were times that Gayle was in clinic and rooming other patients but was still able to help the patient get her wound vac changed. This shows how Gayle goes above and beyond for her patients. The patient had her final surgery the other day and was nervous to take off her bandage at home so Gayle worked her in for a nurse visit and assisted the patient herself even though Gayle was in clinic and rooming patients. The patient has voiced her thankfulness for Gayle and everything Gayle has done for this patient.
This isn’t the only time Gayle has cared for a patient like this. I’ve only been a nurse with Plastic Surgery since May so I’ve only heard stories about her compassion… I’m so glad I got to witness this in person and truly see a nurse live up to her nursing standards!
