As I lay there crying, Bailey got down on her knees, looked me in the eyes, and told me that I was in charge of my health. That I could decide what I did and did not want.
I had Bailey as my nurse for a few days while I was inpatient on Med/Surg battling radiation pneumonitis thanks to my breast cancer treatment. Not only did Bailey do an amazing job as my nurse, but she also spent her energies helping teach another nurse in training.
Bailey was kind, smart, hardworking, committed, and there for me as a patient and as a human being. There was a moment when I broke down: I wasn’t getting better, and I was sick of getting potassium and magnesium through my port AND my arm IV. The arm IV hurt. I decided I had had enough. As I lay there crying, Bailey got down on her knees, looked me in the eyes, and told me that I was in charge of my health. That I could decide what I did and did not want.
That was empowering. During a time when I felt so……unempowered.
Bailey deserves more than a DAISY Award. She was a reassuring light during a difficult time. She embodies what nursing is really about: healing.
