Over the course of the nearly four weeks that he was in the NICU, she became someone we trusted completely.
Megan was the first nurse assigned to our 3-day old son F when he was admitted to the NICU at CHLA. He was very, very sick, and we were terrified. She took excellent care of him, as he was hooked up to so many machines those first few hours, and with every crisis that arose, she was there and helped avert it. Megan then became his primary nurse, and over the course of the nearly four weeks that he was in the NICU, she became someone we trusted completely. She took the time to talk us through each issue our son had, often multiple times, and spent countless hours updating us on his condition and what the next steps were; she always translated unknowable medical terms for us so we understood what his team was doing or thinking. She also seemed to know when either of us was particularly sad or anxious about F, and would go out of our way to involve us in his day-to-day care, or just chat with us generally about our lives to calm us down. Megan celebrated with us when he was taken off a ventilator and when his blood gas levels were good. She also taught F how to eat, and showed us how to feed him so that we could be involved in that process immediately. Everyone we worked with at CHLA was truly excellent, and Megan stands out because she made the whole experience that much easier for us to bear. We owe her a special, special thanks.
