She ensured that when her shift ended, I would continue to have care staff who would also advocate for me if the need arose again. Never in my 40 years of life have I ever had such a caring nurse, not to mention one that would go against the doctors with whom they have to work every single day.
I was admitted around 3:00 AM to the 4K unit for lower abdominal/pelvic/groin pain after being in the Emergency Department from 7:00 PM until I was admitted and the doctor from the ER was unable to find the cause of my pain but could clearly tell I was in a lot of pain. I was told that I would be seeing an OB/GYN and a general surgeon in the morning and the ER doctor was hopeful that they would be able to find the cause of my pain.

However, at 8:30 AM the Hospitalist came in to do his rounds spent 5 minutes or less with me, looked at my stomach, lightly pushed on it in the areas there was no pain and said he was going to send me home. When he told my nurse Jackie, she asked if he was at least going to send me home with something for the pain that even she could clearly see I was in, and he said no. Jackie then tried to talk to him more about this, and he would not budge. Jackie came to give me the next dose of pain meds and told me that she tried to explain to him that she knew my body doesn’t make it easy to find the source of my pain and my symptoms are never textbook style and that they should keep looking to find the source, but he would not budge on sending me home.

After giving me my pain meds, she went and got the Administration involved, who also agreed it was not right to send me home. I was still in so much pain, so the Administration was going to have another hospital doctor come to see me. Jackie made sure she was in my room when the second doctor came, and she stood up for me with the second hospital doctor as well; she continued to fight for me all day with the hospital doctors until they finally agreed to at least get an OB/GYN to see me. She ensured that when her shift ended, I would continue to have care staff who would also advocate for me if the need arose again. Never in my 40 years of life have I ever had such a caring nurse, not to mention one that would go against the doctors with whom they have to work every single day. I can’t even begin to express what Jackie’s actions have meant to me and my family.
