My husband was admitted to the ACE unit from the Emergency Department at my request. I had heard Brian Kern, Director, give a presentation about this new unit at a volunteer meeting. Cindy Garza and Gillian Alexander also kept the Volunteer Board up to date during the training phase. I knew my husband would need the services due to his age and condition. The experience we had as patient and spouse was far beyond our expectations. The expectations of the Leaders on this unit flow gracefully down to each staff member. These employees work as a team. My husband’s room was kept clean by every staff member who walked into the room. The call lights were ALWAYS answered in record time. The hallways were always quiet, which helped us both relax. When a nurse or PCA needed help there was ALWAYS someone at their side. Medications were monitored, and if there was a need to withhold or change, the nurse ALWAYS engaged my husband and explained the reason for the change. When my husband got confused, agitated, or depressed, I watched various staff members comfort and calm him. When the Pastoral Care team came to visit, my husband was given the privacy needed. My husband loves to talk. Staff members stayed at his side and listened. The nurse manager visited daily and addressed his needs. A nurse was sent daily to “round” and comfort us both. This type of care reminded me of many years ago when staff members had time to treat the mind, body, and spirit of the patient. Thank you, Gillian, Cindy, Brian, and Toke, for seeing the need and taking endless classes to develop this special unit.
