He displays admirable empathy for our patient population, as well as for his colleagues. He advocates for the betterment of the department's culture and care delivery through his passion, dedication, and research.
Joe entered the role of Clinical educator in 2022 in the middle of what would end up being a very difficult time for the ER. Record numbers of high-acuity patients in the face of short staffing and bed shortages made his job challenging during the first year. He deftly navigated adversity and difficulty to become, in my opinion, the best CE the Saint Paul ED has ever had.

As a bedside ER Nurse, Joe has proven himself to be an excellent, compassionate, and skilled nurse. As clinical educator, Joe has proven to be a cut above in his quest to better the education program, the workflow, and the culture of the ED. He has excelled in the role through the initiation of renewed programs like monthly simulations and lunch and learns in collaboration with the wonderful Minneapolis CEs, in addition to researching patient flow modalities in an effort to enhance the nursing care delivery model in the Saint Paul ED. He led an initiative to enhance the workflow and efficiency of the resuscitation rooms that led to a resuscitation room redesign, in addition to leading the department through the launch of the new ED EMR. He most recently led the introduction and education initiative of the restraint chair, a tool that is more trauma-informed and will assist the nurses in the ED with difficult behavioral health escalations in a more dignified and safe manner. Needless to say he has been busy! He has also done work to improve the culture of the ED by organizing and hosting social outings for the ED staff to get to know one another and spend time together outside of the hospital setting.

The way Joe dedicates himself to providing patient care makes him a role model in the department. The way he dedicates himself to enhancing the education program for the nursing staff in the ED inspires me. He displays admirable empathy for our patient population, as well as for his colleagues. He advocates for the betterment of the department's culture and care delivery through his passion, dedication, and research. Joe has set the benchmark extremely high through his work as a nurse and clinical educator and is a wonderful example for all of us in the ED. I am thankful we have someone like Joe in the ED, and I thank him for his hard work and dedication to the Saint Paul Emergency Department.
